Phyllis Kress was well loved by nearly every man woman and child who crossed her path. She was adored by many tame and wild cats, kittens and dogs as well. Seems anyone who met her, found it impossible not to ‘love’ her. What a great legacy to leave.
Phyllis was born in Grand Rapids Michigan on September 29th, 1938, she was the daughter of Anthony and Martha Kress.
Phyllis moved to Traverse City where she attended St Francis School, graduating in 1956. Then from Aquinas College and University of Wisconsin. She worked as a costume designer at Penn State. In 1966 she moved to California and taught at UC Davis Theater & Dance Department retiring in 1998. She continued enjoying and producing artwork throughout her lifetime. We are selling many of her original paintings at this estate sale’s event.
In the UCDavis write up about Phyllis upon her passing, they remembered her as saying “We spend a lot of time trying to solve the mystery of how people created their clothing”.
During her tenure in the Department of Theatre and Dance, Dress designed costumes for over 100 productions giving life to numerous characters onstage in beautifully crafted garments.
William Kleb professor emeritus theater and dance stated upon her passing, “She was a constant and positive presence in the life of the department when I was there. She was one of those steady, reliable hands behind, and literally below, the scenes, helping to hold things together, to get our “children’ dressed and up and out on stage–and teaching all the while. One of those people–calm, friendly–who always did ‘a good job.’ I have many, many memories, even at my age, of my many many years at Davis: she is one of the good ones.”
Her legacy includes leaving numerous costume design illustrations, posters and photographs to the UC Davis Special Collections library’s archive.
