The Rivermoor home was the residence of Rey and Keiko, who purchased it when it was completed in 1982. Rey, the son of Japanese immigrants, was born in Lodi in 1923 and made a career working for the United States government, first with the U.S. armed forces during the Korean War and then as a civil servant in Japan. It was in the latter country that he met and married Keiko in the 1950s, and the two started a family shortly afterward.
Keiko was an adept cook, as evidenced by the quality of the pots, pans, and other kitchen tools she amassed over the years. She also made good use of the local Japanese markets by collecting a great variety of china, tea sets, and glassware. Her keen design sense is reflected in the beautiful furniture, rugs, and decorative items she purchased to furnish their home, creating a comfortable residence for herself, Rey, and their two children.
Rey’s interests focused almost exclusively on electronics, and living in Japan through the 60’s and 70’s was an ideal place for a gadget hound. Japanese manufacturers were leaders in using solid state technology to miniaturize all kinds of products, and Rey was an eager purchaser of many of them.
When Rey retired from the civil service, the two moved across the Pacific to Sacramento, closer to Rey’s Lodi birthplace and his brothers, sisters, and their families throughout Northern California. They used their leisure time to golf and visit with friends, with Rey serving as an administrator for several golf leagues including the VFW. Keiko was also an avid golfer and once scored a hole-in-one at an area course!
